Position: Field Technician (Seasonal)
Construction & Ecological Restoration Division |
V3’s Construction & Ecological Restoration Division is seeking qualified candidates to fill multiple Field Technician positions. For those students interested in the biological sciences (i.e., biology, botany, ecology, zoology, aquatic ecology, etc...), these positions offer valuable field experience working within the Chicago region.
Position Details:
- Location: Various Sites in the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area
- Starting Date: April 2012 or May 2012
- Duration: Project dependent - Approximately late July 2012 or late August 2012
- Hours per Week: 25 - 45 (project & weather dependent)
- Pay: $10/14/hr (based on experience)
- Overtime Pay: 1.5 x base wage for every hour worked over 40 in the same week
- Applications: Accepted through 4/30/12 or until positions are filled
Field Technicians will assist V3 staff ecologists with a variety of field management activities for projects around the greater Chicagoland area. The primary responsibility of Field Technicians will be to conduct invasive species control (mechanical and chemical methods). Technicians will obtain a herbicide operators license issued by the State of Illinois. Technicians will spend 100% of their time in the field at various project locations as assigned. Technicians will work in vegetative communities such as prairies, wetlands, sedge meadows, woodlands, and naturalized basins. Technicians may also conduct wetland plant installation. Technicians will learn plant identification, plant ecology and invasive species control methods, and will be exposed to various ecological management practices commonly used in the Great Lakes Region as well as exposure to various restoration and enhancement, wetland mitigation/creation, and naturalization projects. Other responsibilities may include irrigation, tree and shrub installation, select tree removal and erosion control blanket installation.
Technicians will be scheduled on various project sites, possibly on a daily basis, throughout the season. Project sites are located throughout the greater Chicagoland area, including DuPage, Cook, Will, Kane, and Lake Counties, Illinois and Lake County, Indiana. Technicians will likely be assigned to project sites located in most, if not all, of these counties throughout the duration of the season.
Requirements:
- Must be a college student or graduate working towards or with a degree in the biological sciences;
- Must be at least 18 years of age;
- Must provide own private transportation to each project location;
- Must have the physical ability to work in up to 2 feet of muddy water and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds, while exposed to outdoor elements such as heat and rain.

Position: Ecological Restoration Equipment Operator
Construction & Ecological Restoration Division |
V3 Companies’ ecological restoration division performs a wide range of services on wetland properties and natural areas including design, construction/implementation, and long term management.
The preferred candidate for this equipment operator role will have a background in natural area installation and management and/or agricultural knowledge related to planting and seeding of natural areas. The primary role of this position will be to operate the equipment associated with seeding, invasive species control, and mowing.
Position Details:
- Type: Full Time
- Timeframe: Immediate Need / Seasonal with full year potential
- Salary: Commensurate with experience, education, and certifications
Primary Responsibilities:
- Skid steer operation for grading and soil preparation
- Tractor and drill seeder operation for broadcast of native seed mixes
- Tractor and boom spray operation for application of herbicides
- Bat wing mowing
- Transport of equipment
- Coordination with construction foreman, project managers and ecologists
- Work hours (average) range from 30-60 hours/week and varies with seasons
Other Duties & Responsibilities:
- Application of herbicide (hand wicking, backpack spraying, etc.)
- Native plug installation
- Brush clearing, tree cutting and general chainsaw work
- Erosion control installations
- General field labor
Qualifications:
- Class A CDL (air brakes not required)
- Basic knowledge of machine maintenance
- Competent in the use hand tools and equipment
- Licensed herbicide applicator or ability to obtain the license through the state of Illinois state herbicide exam
- Ability to perform physical labor throughout the year (lift/carry minimum 50 lbs)
- Strong work ethic and willingness to perform multiple tasks
- Excellent communication and team work skills
- Agricultural experience a plus
- Basic knowledge of native and non-native plant species of the Chicago region

Position: Design/Project Engineers

The ideal candidates will possess strong technical, communication and organizational skills and a desire to advance to project management. A commitment to a team-based work environment and a desire to be part of a growing enterprise also are essential.
General responsibilities include:
- Designing land and site development and infrastructure projects for commercial, industrial, residential, institutional and governmental clients throughout Edmonton and northern Alberta;
- Providing assistance to Project Managers in the due diligence, design and permitting processes for site development projects;
- Assisting Project Managers in client and regulatory agency communication;
- Providing construction phase services (observation and inspection) for projects under construction.
Qualified candidates will have the following:
- Degree in civil engineering from an accredited university;
- A minimum of three (3) years of applicable experience;
- EIT / P.Eng. (Canada) or EIT / PE (USA) preferred;
- Professional registration with APEGGA preferred;
- US-based PE applicants will be expected to apply for and fulfill the requirements for P.Eng. status with APEGGA.
