Church Road Widening & Improvements

Aurora, Illinois

  • This one-mile length of roadway was widened and re-profiled from a rural two-lane section to a three-lane urban collector section with enclosed storm sewer drainage and underground detention storage.

  • Major project components included pavement and driveway removals, embankment widening, installation of storm sewer, watermain, curb and gutter, new sidewalks, aggregate base course, HMA binder and surface courses with super elevated alignments, traffic signals, roadway lighting, signage and landscaping.

  • SWPPP monitoring for adjacent wetlands and on-site Waters of the US was required for the issued USACE permit.

  • Project dynamics included single-lane, one-way maintenance of traffic throughout construction because of right-of-way limitations.  Full access to all residential, industrial and commercial businesses within the corridor was critical to public acceptance of the project.

  • The closing of the roadway over the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) during bridge embankment widening required the implementation and monitoring of a regional detour route requiring IDOT permits on Farnsworth and Butterfield Roads.

  • On-going right-of-way acquisitions, with extensive gas, telephone and aerial electric utility relocations throughout the duration of the construction process required continual communication and advance planning of activities by multiple contractors.

  • To avoid project delays, V3 used diligent field investigation, continuous coordination with utility companies and technical field modifications to quickly evaluate and resolve conflicts between existing utilities and proposed storm system improvements.
