Monon Trail Improvements & Midtown Plaza

Carmel, Indiana

  • Our team worked with the City of Carmel to further develop its vision for a downtown area known as Midtown; a historical area that was primarily industrial, located approximately a half mile north of City Hall and split by the popular rail-to-trail project known as the Monon trail.

  • The City had been studying this area and vision-casting the redevelopment options for more than a decade. A development at the north and south ends of the area heightened the interest and accelerated the schedule to improve this region.

  • V3 built upon the original vision by performing a detailed analysis of the approximate 90-acre area and demonstrating ways to incorporate sustainability into the public spaces.

  • As the centerpiece to this region, the City chose to make a significant investment by upgrading the Monon trail into a linear park with streets, parking, trails, technology, water parks as well as storefront opportunities for the development along the route incorporating many of the sustainable methods envisioned during the planning exercise.

  • Working in the historic Monon corridor presented several challenges. First, many utility corridors (especially fiber optic) had to be carefully considered and as they impacted the final design.┬áSecond, historic drainage problems and downstream restrictions made it difficult to determine the most effective way to eliminate flooding without relying on private land to manage stormwater.

  • V3 worked closely with the design team to implement all parts of this iconic project that was completed in 2020.

  • This project won an Urban Land Institute Americas Award for Excellence Special Mention in 2022.
