The County of Grande Prairie adopted an Area Structure Plan for the development of a new downtown to support Clairmont, which it expects to grow to 20,000-plus residents. The County wanted to develop concepts related to the downtown core and main roadway, a primary feature of which is a multi-purpose trail that connects the local school, lake, downtown and future residential development. The design included a new downtown streetscape, low-impact sustainable features, and a framework for building form, bulk and architectural guidelines. Obtaining buy-in involved extensive engagement, informing the community and stakeholders regarding urban design principles, followed by garnering their input in workshops. The design, which was informed by the community through this process, received unanimous support and is proceeding to detail design.
