Route 59 Metra Station Parking Lot & Intersection Improvements

Aurora, Illinois

  • V3 provided Phase I preliminary engineering and Phase II design engineering services for this project.

  • Funded by the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality program, this project consisted of resurfacing, reconfiguring and expanding the Route 59 Metra Station parking lot from 2,228 to 2,657 stalls and adding a new driveway to improve pedestrian, bike, vehicle and bus access to the train station.

  • V3 prepared schematic design alternatives and budgetary cost estimates that included reconfiguring the parking lot to north-south drive aisles, short term drop-off and pick-up areas, designated motorcycle parking areas and a dedicated Pace bus area.

  • Extensive stormwater improvements were required to meet the County Stormwater Ordinance which included a large surface detention facility, a double 12-foot by six-foot box culvert and extensive naturalized landscaping.

  • New traffic signals and pedestrian crossings were added to improve pedestrian circulation and access and to meet current ADA standards.

  • New LED light fixtures and poles were also included.

  • An extensive surveillance camera system was designed to provide high-definition coverage of the entire parking facility and station area.

  • Provisions were made for new bicycle rack locations.

  • Coordination between the City and Pace was necessary to provide an appropriate location for the dedicated bus area. The existing east parking overflow lot will be converted to a designated bus staging area which was a main concern with Pace. The bus area will have wide sidewalks and provisions for Pace to add shelters once the project is complete.

  • All work was completed in accordance to IDOT standards and guidelines.
