About

VISIO, VERTERE, VIRTUTE

V3 Companies can be described in many ways: Most simply, we are a multidisciplinary firm offering civil engineering, contracting, environmental, planning, landscape architecture and surveying services. But that tells only a small piece of our story. We’re frequently asked, “What does ‘V3’ stand for?” … and the answer often surprises people. V3 represents an acronym for three Latin words – “Visio,” “Vertere,” “Virtute” or “The Vision to Transform with Excellence” – a statement of the aspirations we have for the growth of our employees, our service to our clients and the impact we have in our communities.

more than just words

Since our founding in 1983, V3 Companies has adhered to five fundamental core values. Unwavering integrity that includes honesty and transparency in our communications and business endeavors. Commitment to excellence by efficiently providing high-quality professional services. Focus on clients and the importance of doing all we can to achieve their objectives. Dedication to employees and the understanding that our people are our most valuable asset. Service to community, the lasting impact we have on the communities where we live and work is exponentially multiplied when applying our collective time and resources. V3’s cultural foundation was built and nurtured with these core values as our guide.

Capturing Our Essence

We asked our team to describe V3 in three words. The size of the word indicates how often it was used.

Doing Our Part

When V3 talks about transforming the world, it’s not just the “built” world. We believe job satisfaction involves giving back and supporting communities in ways outside of the conventional. We have ongoing relationships with eight different local and international non-profit organizations that align with our company’s core competencies.

“The V3 Social Responsibility program has a lot of opportunities for employees to contribute and to do something they enjoy. There is always a variety of work to do; everyone is welcome. I volunteered for a river cleanup and I will do it again.”

Lesley Lapinski, Senior Operations and Fleet Coordinator

Through the V3 Social Responsibility program (VSR) our company provides every employee with paid time off to volunteer their time and skills to help those in need. Whether contributing in river cleanups, mentoring STEM educational programs, constructing housing or delivering new water systems in Central America, we understand that being an enriched employee often means being an engaged citizen.

THE POWER OF TOGETHER

The foundation for V3’s role in being an agent of change begins in our own offices with a commitment to an increasingly diverse and inclusive work environment for our employees, regardless of their race, religion, age, gender or sexual orientation. This foundation provides a more informed platform for V3’s role in creating educational and employment opportunities for societal change.

To better support our commitment to this effort, V3 formed a Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Committee that operates through four subgroups to focus on key areas of influence and opportunities to make V3 a more diverse and inclusive workplace. V3 is dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workplace that fosters a respectful and equitable environment for all employees.

Rooted in Values

In 1983, company founder Rob Petroelje had the vision to create a unique civil engineering firm in which team members have opportunities to excel and clients can benefit from long-term value. Armed with little more than his own professional expertise and a strong work ethic developed on the Michigan dairy farm of his youth, Petroelje launched SDI Consultants Ltd. with a clear foundation: values, purpose and competency. In 2000, reflecting the firm’s broader service offerings and a desire to position it for the future, SDI was renamed V3 and organized into distinct but interrelated practice areas and regional offices to serve its clients’ design and construction objectives.

As the firm grew, Petroelje realized the great truth of consulting firms: You’re only as strong as your people. With purpose, the company has focused on developing its employees to achieve their best. This resulted in a clear vision of growth and opportunity and a drive to broaden the ownership of the firm among his employees. Today V3 operates under a “One Team” model that encourages collaboration across all practice areas and markets, and shares the rewards of its success with all of its employees.

The Future

The future is bright for V3. Guided by a set of company-wide strategic objectives, we are forging ahead with plans for geographic expansion, new lines of technical expertise, and a continued dedication to excellence in both our relations with clients and project performance.

V3 is as dedicated as ever to building on the solid foundation that has made us who we are today. Continuing to foster the growth and development of our most important asset – our people – remains a paramount objective. Equally as important is to provide the opportunities for them to thrive by steadily pursuing measured growth, expanding what we do and where we do it.
