153rd Street & Ravinia Avenue Intersection Improvements
The intersection at 153rd Street and Ravinia Avenue in Orland Park was experiencing a high level of accidents due to distracted drivers stopping at a temporary traffic signal. We provided Phase I services to evaluate two alternatives: a traditional traffic signal with lengthened storage lengths to accommodate operational demand vs. a single lane roundabout. Based on our recommendations, the Village chose the roundabout since we found it would reduce the number of intersection conflict points while also excelling during off-peak traffic periods. In addition, we led the federal funding application process and successfully obtained STP-L funding for the Phase II design and Phase III construction.

Project Highlights:
- Our team conducted a queue analysis by simulating the future traffic volumes along the 153rd Street corridor, between Ravinia Avenue and LaGrange Road, due to the close proximity of an adjacent intersection. This analysis indicated no detrimental queuing between the two intersections.
- The project site was within the Village of Orland Park’s jurisdiction and the project was processed through IDOT District One – Bureau of Local Roads.
