Bridge Inspection & Management Program
We’ve partnered with a utility company to provide ongoing bridge inspection and maintenance for 55 bridges across the Chicagoland area. The structures range from single-span bridges in rural areas to multi-span bridges over Chicago streets. Many of the bridges are old railroad structures that are up to 110 years old. All bridges are inspected at a 24-month interval, using National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) inspection forms when appropriate. When rehabilitative needs are discovered, we assist the utility company in determining where priorities lie, providing design services for anything from minor bridge repairs, to replacement of a bridge with a pipe culvert, to a full redesign of a replacement bridge structure. We also provide permitting services and construction quality assurance services for many of the bridges that require rehabilitative work.
Additonal Info
Project Highlights:
- We perform the inspections, prepare inspection reports, and complete standard NBIS forms. A Microsoft Access database was created to provide an interface for the client to search and organize all information on all the structures in their bridge inventory.
- For what started as 68 bridges on ComEd-owned property, over time some of these structures have been eliminated by either complete demolition or by replacement with culverts. There are now 55 bridges in the inventory.
