Hainesville Road Improvements
The 1.5-mile-long section of Hainesville Road from Washington Street to Rollins Road in Lake County, IL currently experiences mobility and operational issues and lacks both pedestrian and bicyclist accommodations. Our team provided Phase I preliminary engineering and Phase II design engineering services to address these concerns. Key challenges included a variety of stormwater management issues and the minimization of impacts to adjacent utilities, wetlands, and residential properties. The project will result in a consistent, three-lane urban roadway section with a new five-foot-wide sidewalk and an eight-foot-wide multi-use path, creating improved traffic flow and better accessibility for pedestrians and bicyclists. The project also included the expansion of two ponds within the adjacent Park District golf course to provide the required stormwater detention.

Project highlights:
- A pavement condition and feasibility study was conducted to evaluate options to fully reconstruct or widen and resurface the corridor to achieve a three-lane section.
- The widened roadway section required a design that minimized impacts to right-of-way, adjacent utilities, drainage features, as well as potential wetland and environmental impacts.
- The design also accommodates a turnout area for mail delivery and refuse pick up to avoid disrupting the flow of Hainesville Road traffic.
- Wetland investigation and mitigation measures as well as soil management strategies are also being evaluated as part of the project.
- As part of the alternative evaluation process, the design team engaged multiple stakeholders and the public to solicit input regarding the inclusion of the multi-use path and sidewalk within the project limits.
- The widened corridor will create more than 1.5 acres of new impervious area, thereby requiring a watershed development permit from the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission and the need for stormwater detention. As a result, the project includes the expansion of two ponds within the adjacent Park District public golf course. We coordinated extensively with both the Park District and golf course management to develop design details that minimize disruption to these facilities.
