Levine Cancer Proton & Advanced Radiation Center

The Atrium Health Levine Cancer Proton & Advanced Radiation Center, located in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a pioneering facility in radiation treatment. This project marks a major leap forward in regional cancer care, overcoming numerous logistical and environmental hurdles to establish a cutting-edge center.
Spanning just under two acres, this urban infill project is the first of its kind in Charlotte and one of only a few dozen worldwide. The project required optimizing a compact urban site, ensuring both facility and emergency access, and incorporating stormwater management solutions.
Integrating the facility with the existing infrastructure in an older part of town presented challenges due to congested utilities. The building design evolved throughout the project, including potential additions like a basement, necessitating adjustments to utility plans.
The project faced stringent deadlines for civil permitting to align with the hospital’s opening date, requiring coordination with City and NCDOT reviews.
Additionally, efforts were made to preserve a significant 54-inch tree on the site, involving meticulous grading and construction practices.
