West Side Neighborhood Storage Contract #2

To reduce neighborhood flooding and provide long‑term stormwater relief, the City implemented a large‑scale underground detention project beneath residential streets and athletic fields. The improvements required deep excavation, complex utility coordination, and careful construction staging to keep local traffic moving while minimizing disruption to nearby homes. Our team delivered full construction services for the detention system, utility upgrades, roadway reconstruction, and site restoration, ensuring the project met performance goals while maintaining access and safety for residents.
KEY CONTRIBUTIONS:
Construction of the Underground Detention System
Our team installed 10 acre‑feet of storage using a StormTrap Doubletrap system composed of 520 precast pieces, along with a 30‑foot‑deep lift station to control stormwater discharge.
Major Earthwork & Site Preparation
We excavated 37,000 cubic yards of material to create the space needed for the detention structure, coordinating haul routes and staging to limit neighborhood impacts.
Retention System for Adjacent Roadway & Trees
Because the work was close to Skokie Valley Road, we installed a soil‑nail retention system to protect the existing sidewalk and preserve parkway trees throughout construction.
Storm Sewer & Underdrain Installation
Approximately 4,100 feet of new storm sewer—ranging from 12 to 60 inches in diameter—was constructed, including 56 manholes and 3,000 linear feet of underdrain to improve system performance.
Watermain & Sanitary Sewer Improvements
We installed more than 1,000 feet of new watermain and 1,350 feet of sanitary sewer, reconnecting all residential services with minimal disruption to homeowners.
Neighborhood Traffic & Roadway Reconstruction
Construction moved block by block to maintain local access. Once underground work was complete, we reconstructed affected streets with grading, stone base, concrete curb, and new asphalt pavement.
Restoration of Park & Athletic Areas
The athletic fields above the StormTrap system were rebuilt using amended topsoil, and surrounding areas received native seeding, plugs, shrubs, and a new rain garden for added bioretention.
