Durkees Run Stormwater Park

Durkees Run Stormwater Park transformed underutilized tennis courts into a multifunctional space benefiting Lafayette area residents and the adjacent high school. The completed park both manages the local watershed while also providing an outdoor classroom amphitheater, ADA-accessible boardwalks and overlooks, and fabricated landscape features that educate guests on stormwater management. This Lafayette trails destination spot also includes minimal sewer separation techniques to create a heavily landscaped green infrastructure system in a centralized setting, allowing public interaction. Our innovative approach, created by our cohesive team of civil engineers, landscape architects, stormwater engineers, and ecological scientists, resulted in a concept that defied expectations and was championed by Lafayette’s mayor; it’s now an engaging space for guests to sit, study, and relax.

Additional Info

Project highlights:

  • This project was part of a larger public works project included in the city’s long-term control plan for combined sewer abatement.
  • The local watershed, incorporated into the park, accounts for approximately 10% of the overall Durkees Run Interceptor area and removes 2.8 million gallons per year from the combined sewer system.
  • Due to the park’s location, opportunities for public outreach and education were realized for the school and area residents.
  • The project team provided an open book contract, partnering with the City to deliver a guaranteed maximum price performance design build process using the State of Indiana’s Energy Savings/Performance Contracting Legislation.
  • We provided all direct labor and equipment to construct the bioretention basins, constructed wetland basins, and upland prairie buffer areas including all engineered soil amendments, native seed and plant installation, native trees and shrubs, and temporary erosion control measures. We also provided maintenance services for these vegetated systems.
