V3 Companies received a Merit Award in the category of Special Projects from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois (ACEC-IL) as part of its 2017 Engineering Excellence Awards competition. The awards program recognizes the best, most innovative and complex engineering projects across a range of project types.
The Union Station Transit Center is a $47 million facility currently serving 3,400 daily commuters on six-CTA bus routes and is the nexus point for the nearly-complete Loop Link Bus Rapid Transit System. The facility has three separate bus lanes with a maximum capacity of nine buses and is completely ADA accessible. Glass and steel canopies and six windbreak panels provide protection from the weather. information boards and video screens, bus-tracker LED signage and Push-to-Talk (PTT) customer assistance features are included. The new facility is linked to Amtrak/Chicago Union Station via a new pedway beneath Canal Street.
V3 was retained by the City of Chicago, Department of Transportation as the prime consultant, to perform pre-construction, construction and post-construction phase engineering services for the Union Station Transit Center project. Pre-construction services included performing constructability reviews and checking for plan errors on the later design milestone submittals. Construction phase services included field observation and documentation, contract administration, utility coordination, special waste and materials documentation. In addition, V3 processed requests for information (RFIs), contract modifications, and reviewed CPM Schedule updates. V3 acted as the focal point of contact between the Chicago Department of Transportation, Amtrak, Metra and other parties representing Chicago Union Station, the Chicago Transit Authority, numerous public utilities encountered in the right of way and various building managers for the neighboring high rises. Post-construction services included the review of all as-built drawings, compile and review all operation and maintenance and warranty information and forward to stakeholders and provide all necessary close-out documentation to the client.
