V3 Companies received a Merit Award in the category of Transportation from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois (ACEC-IL) as part of its 2017 Engineering Excellence Awards competition. The awards program recognizes the best, most innovative and complex engineering projects across a range of project types.
The Willow Road Reconstruction Project replaced two miles of the existing two-lane, hot mix asphalt (HMA) roadway with a four-lane, Portland cement concrete roadway with channelization and new traffic signals at seven signalized intersections. Work included replacement of the bridge over the East Branch of the Chicago River and HMA paving on I-94. Wide-scale underground improvements were provided including a 72-inch and a 66-inch trunk line storm sewer system to provide underground storage capacity. Both the existing watermain and sanitary sewer were replaced throughout the project limits. In addition to the roadway improvements, many streetscape elements were provided including landscaped medians, ornamental lighting and brick pavers.
V3 Companies was the prime consultant during construction. Roles provided included: resident engineer, documentation technician, materials coordinator, quality assurance (QA) survey and construction observation.
As the resident engineer, V3 was responsible for: maintaining the project diary and preparing weekly reports; evaluating and recommending changes based on field conditions, preparing field orders, prior approvals and authorizations; preparing contractor pay estimates; review of submittals and requests for information, conducting weekly construction progress and bi-weekly utility coordination meetings; providing coordination with Northfield, Northbrook and Glenview municipal staff and Northfield school district personnel; responded to public questions and concerns regarding the project from both the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and Northfield websites; and provided construction observation of various work efforts.
