Meet Josh Visser – Project Engineer

December 4, 2024

Construction engineers address aging infrastructure to create safer, stronger communities, and for V3 Project Engineer Josh Visser, there’s nothing more rewarding than leaving a place better than he found it. Discover how his lifelong curiosity for how things are built has transformed into a meaningful, fulfilling career.

From spaceships to structures

Josh’s quest to build a better world started with Legos. As a kid, he loved constructing everything from skyscrapers to spaceships with the tiny blocks, marveling at the many ways a structure can come to life. This curiosity for how things are built eventually inspired him to work as a laborer for a general contractor in commercial construction. This hands-on experience further ignited his passion for construction, leading him to first enroll at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology before completing his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2021.

After graduation, Josh was ready to take on exciting work and started researching local firms. His quest led him to V3, where he was impressed by both a portfolio of notable projects and a welcoming atmosphere.

“During my interview, I remember feeling very calm and relaxed. I enjoyed talking with everyone and it just felt like the right place to start my career.”

Josh joined the team in May of 2021 as an Engineer-in-Training and immediately dove into the world of construction engineering. He immersed himself in learning all the equipment, technology, and tools necessary for the job, splitting his time between working in the field and the office. After years of training, studying, and engineer job shadowing, Josh earned his Professional Engineer license in 2024, giving him the opportunity to take on even more responsibilities.

“Something I really appreciate about V3 is how we have the equipment and talent needed to get things done efficiently. By collaborating between offices, we are able to tackle challenges quickly and come up with innovative solutions, which helps us prevent costly delays and ensures our projects are successful.”

Constructing safer communities

As a Project Engineer, Josh ensures projects keep moving forward, balancing contractor, site, and client needs. In addition to designing, completing inspections, and surveying, he spends a significant amount of time communicating with project stakeholders to keep everyone informed and on track. Many of his construction projects involve replacing deteriorated infrastructure: a task that provides endless satisfaction.

“It is very rewarding to know that the infrastructure I help rehabilitate will remain intact for years, be safer, and benefit the surrounding residents and businesses. For me, it’s not just about replacing the old with the new; it’s about finding all the big and little ways in which enhancements can be made.”

He’s currently devoting his talents to the Main Street Lac La Biche Revitalization Project: a multiyear endeavor that is reimagining an outdated downtown area. This complex, three-phase effort has been a collaborative and rewarding challenge not only for Josh but V3 as a whole, pulling from the team’s multidisciplinary specialties.

“As the prime consultants, V3 has been at the center of everything, ensuring this project progresses smoothly and successfully. This project has challenged me in many ways and provided numerous learning opportunities; I’ve become well-acquainted with the community and deeply invested in providing them with a new, safer, and more beautiful Main Street.”

Finding joy in the journey

When he’s not building new worlds, Josh loves traveling around our current one with his wife. Together they’ve explored Mexico, Thailand, and the United States, with an upcoming journey planned to Jamaica. He also enjoys yoga, weightlifting, practicing piano, reading, and playing with his two dogs, Grayson and Lucy.

Looking ahead, Josh is excited to continue expanding his skills by working on different types of projects that include transportation and stormwater management. With his passion for learning and transforming communities, the sky’s the limit for this talented engineer.

“V3 has provided me with all the growth opportunities I could ask for, and I feel constantly supported in becoming the engineer that I aspire to be. With the company’s growth and the creation of new service lines, I’m excited to be a part of V3’s future.”
