V3 Wins 2024 APWA Chicago Metro Suburban Branch Public Works Project of the Year in Environment $5 to $25 Million

January 17, 2024

We are thrilled to announce that V3 was selected for the 2024 APWA Chicago Metro Chapter (Suburban Branch) Public Works Project of the Year in the Environment category ($5 to $25 Million)! This competitive award is judged on criteria such as safety, sustainability, environmental awareness, community considerations, and value engineering, and we are so honored to see our work recognized with such prestige.

This award was given to our Central Avenue Reconstruction & Sewer Separation Improvement project in the Village of Western Springs. The project’s objective was to separate the sanitary sewer from the storm sewer which eliminated street flooding and sewer backups within the project area. Our team provided Phase III construction engineering services for an extensive separation of sanitary from storm sewers throughout the Village, overcoming many challenges along the way.

Flooding pre-construction
After

A new 66-inch RCP storm sewer trunk line was constructed from Flagg Creek to the intersection of 47th and Central Avenue.  New storm sewer main line and lateral connections were constructed along Central Avenue and Elm Street which separated all storm sewer discharge into the sanitary sewer system.  This new drainage system greatly improved the surface drainage for both roadways. The critical element of this project involved having to cross 47th Street with the new storm sewer trunk line within the bridge cone of the I-294 overpass to reach the available outfall into Flagg Creek. This—along with utility conflicts from the existing water main, storm sewer, and AT&T duct banks—complicated the location of the required bore pits. A field change to relocate the sewer alignment and proposed jacking pits was coordinated with the contractor and owner, resulting in an alignment shift of over 80-feet to the east which avoided major disturbance to this pedestrian park path and ultimately reduced the overall construction timeframe.

Full reconstruction of Central Avenue included concrete pavement and curbs to a new vertical alignment with a continuous parking lane along the park. Work also included:

  • Modernization of the existing traffic signal to radar detection
  • Installation of accessible pedestrian signals
  • New driveway aprons
  • Improved crosswalks and sidewalk repairs for ADA compliance
  • Sanitary sewer point repairs
  • New residential service laterals

“This award brings a sense of accomplishment to all the hard work, hours, communication, and coordination that it took to deliver a successful project for the Village of Western Springs.  The Village of Western Springs, V3 Companies, & Berger Excavating formed a great partnering to deliver the community a beautiful roadway & infrastructure upgrade.”

Sean Ludwig, Resident Construction Manager II

Thank you to the APWA Chicago Metro Chapter (Suburban Branch) for recognizing our commitment to excellence, and congratulations to our fellow 2024 award winners!
