V3 Wins 2024 APWA Fox Valley Branch Public Works Project of the Year in Transportation $5 to $25 Million

January 23, 2024

We are proud to announce that V3 was selected for the 2024 APWA Chicago Metro Chapter (Fox Valley Branch) Public Works Project of the Year in the Transportation category ($5 to $25 Million). This prestigious award is given to public works projects that not only achieve engineering excellence but also exhibit care and consideration for community relations, environmental awareness, safety precautions, and more. Learn how we rose to the top with our work in Blackberry Township this past year!

(March 2024 update) This project advanced to the next level and won the Chicago Metro Chapter award as well, making it the winner for all five Chicago branches.

Before
After

This award was bestowed to the Bliss, Main, and Fabyan Intersection Improvement project that aimed to improve safety and relieve traffic congestion in the Batavia/Sugar Grove/Elburn area.

The ambitious scope of work included:

  • New roadway construction
  • Roundabout construction
  • Embankment placements
  • Maintaining traffic flows
  • Managing Drainage
  • Landscape restoration

The two signalized intersections at Bliss Road/Main Street, and Fabyan Parkway/Main Street were removed and replaced with an oval-shaped, single-lane roundabout. The decision to construct a roundabout at this location was based on existing and proposed traffic numbers, as well as crash data at both intersections.

The new Bliss Road alignment bisected the riparian corridor of Lake Run Creek, which contained identified wetlands, floodplain, and floodway. Environmental considerations, such as a vegetated 1:1 soil slope wall, stream bank stabilization, and a commitment to plant over 400 new trees were a significant part of project planning.

Throughout construction, safety remained a top priority and was maintained through various measures and protocols. Traffic on these arterial streets remained open during most of the work effort. Coordination with Batavia, Sugar Grove, and Elburn Countryside Fire Districts, as well as the Batavia Park District confirmed public safety was of primary concern during all phases of work.

This $11.9M project was funded locally to address Kane County’s long-range planning for changing traffic patterns in the area. The project reconstructed 1.9 miles of roadway and was opened to traffic ahead of the scheduled completion date at a cost below the awarded contract value.

“There is great satisfaction in being part of something that will be utilized by many people for decades to come. We had a great team, with a common goal to deliver the very best product we could, given the conditions we had to deal with, and we achieved that goal!   Working outside one’s comfort zone, solving problems as they present themselves, and seeing the fruits of those efforts be utilized and appreciated by the end users, makes doing the job enjoyable, and yearning to do even bigger things in the future! ”

Rick Kipp, Senior Project Manager

This is our second APWA award win this season, and we’re thrilled to be honored at this level. Thank you to the APWA Chicago Metro Chapter (Fox Valley Branch) for recognizing our commitment to excellence, and congratulations to our fellow 2024 award winners!
