Our golf projects are built on tradition, dedication, and the artistic vision and collaboration of our clients, golf course architects, and V3’s land planners and landscape architects—such as Trevor Hansen. Meet one of our new team members from KoontzJones Design and discover how a lifelong love of golf inspired this talented designer and project manager to help create exceptional golf experiences all over the world.
Getting on the green
Trevor found the fairway towards landscape architecture at a very young age. He began playing golf as a child and often attended professional tournaments with his dad, a nationally recognized volunteer rules official for the USGA. This early immersion into the golf community sparked a deep passion —not just for the game, but for the courses themselves. The unique designs and distinctive environments captured his imagination and set a future foundation for his career path.
“To me, golf is the sport that most emulates life. You are in complete control and all decisions lie with you. Through the ups and downs of the game, you’ll never fully have it figured out, and I find that so interesting. Not to mention that no other sport features a unique playing playground in every different location—it’s a very complex game.”
He studied landscape architecture at Utah State University, where he enjoyed working on real-world projects that challenged his design and problem-solving talents. After graduating, he joined the renowned golf course architecture firm Robert Trent Jones II, in both their California and Philippine offices and later with Landscapes Unlimited, a leading US golf course contractor, contributing to the planning, design, and construction of courses across the US and around the world.
During the COVID pandemic, golf’s outdoor setting led to a surge in golf development which drew Trevor to Pinehurst, NC: the “Home of American Golf.” In 2020, he joined KoontzJones Design— a firm with an extensive golf and hospitality portfolio—and found like-minded professionals inspired by the charm and character of the historic Village of Pinehurst, designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted. Trevor is driven by a desire to channel this ethos into creating authentic, imaginative places that enhance people’s lives.
In early 2025, KoontzJones Design joined forces with V3: a move that further ignited Trevor’s career goals.
“From the very start it was clear our two companies shared the same growth initiatives and commitment to employee satisfaction. I could easily sense V3’s values. You hear of mergers where firms bulldoze their way in, but that wasn’t the case here. V3’s leaders expressed their desire to develop talent and work together to shape the firm’s growth; our input is valued, and we’ve formed a strong connection.”
Going for birdie

In the five years since joining the firm, Trevor has played a key role in advancing its work. As a Project Manager in Landscape Architecture and Land Planning, he wears many hats, splitting his time between field visits and office support. In line with the Pinehurst Office’s leadership driven approach, Trevor is deeply involved in the design of all his projects. He is also a strong client advocate and a dedicated mentor to junior staff, regularly attending public hearings and providing thoughtful feedback on both project execution and professional development.
No matter how busy Trevor gets, giving clients personalized attention is always top priority.
“Our team approaches every project with a comprehensive perspective. We begin each project with hand-drawn sketches and concepts, giving us a deeper understanding of large-scale land plans and how all the components fit together. While many firms have moved away from this practice, we consider it one of our greatest strengths. We believe it leads to more creative and thoughtful design solutions— and many of our clients prefer this approach.“
Knowing his work will stand the test of time is also a big motivator.
“We’re creating places for people to enjoy. Whether it’s lodging amenities on a golf course or the USGA Golf House Pinehurst, the landscapes we design will evolve and mature, slowly transforming into the fully realized vision. Someday when my son is grown, he’ll still be able to see my work. It’s a legacy I am very proud of.”
Working on the long game

While it’s no surprise that Trevor hits the links outside of work, what he enjoys most is spending time with his wife, Nhing, and 7-year-old son, Ben. The foodie family loves trying new restaurants and experimenting with recipes at home. Whether it’s Asian, Italian, or any world cuisine, the spicier the better for Trevor and his crew.
As KoontzJones Design and V3 come together, Trevor is excited to help facilitate growth and explore his ever-expanding list of interests.
“I’m thrilled to be involved with this company’s growth. I’m ready to help expand our brand and reputation, making us a world leader. Our leadership is very likeminded and that makes all the difference.”
